Hydro Electric Canal Modelling
AULOS is based on over 30 years
of continuous development, including models developed
to ensure that water flows through the huge canal network of the Upper Waitaki were
controllable. The picture shown here was taken during preparatory testing being done
at full scale, in the late 1970’s.
More recently, AULOS has been used to verify real time control improvements in this system.
The Waikato (NZ) river has 8 hydro-electric dams, multiple turbines and spillways, three tunnels, and bypasses totalling 50 channel branches along a distance of 200 km. When the operating rules for extreme floods were established 25 years ago it was not possible to determine whether application of the rules to protect an upstream structure would worsen conditions at downstream dams. In a world-first study, AULOS was used to test the whole network flood control under hazardous conditions up to the probable maximum flood, leading to significant modifications to the emergency operating procedures.
